Help Ms. Chalfant

Hi! I am a second grade teacher at a low-income school in Santa Clara, CA, and I am looking to add to my classroom library. I am implementing a new Reading Workshop model in my classroom for the 2006-2007 school year, and am looking for some non-fiction texts to add that can be leveled to the students I teach. Non-fiction texts are one of the most difficult genres to teach because the level of most texts is usually high above the level of my second graders. I teach a non-fiction unit in reading AND writing, so the books will serve as a sounding base for Reading Workshop and for mentor texts in Writing Workshop. Research shows that when children read at their independent reading level, they can successfully practice the strategies taught in class. Please contribute to helping my children read by donating for our leveled non-fiction library.
