A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students live in the shadow of the tech industry, yet have little access to technology in their homes. While their families struggle to maintain consistent housing in the outrageous housing market of the Bay Area, my students must overcome great financial obstacles to gain entrance to the world of wealth around them.
As students from the poorest section of the richest city in the nation, my students are keenly aware of the inequities that they face.
They are industrious, determined students, most of whom are first or second generation immigrants, trying to help their families survive in the most expensive housing market in the country. Often learning English as a second language, my students recognize the barriers they must overcome in order to gain access to the wealth they are surrounded by.
My Project
Having access to technology is essential for my students, who live in the forgotten backyard of the tech industry. While many students have access to cell phones, they still struggle to learn basic computer skills. Many students, because they lack access to computers, attempt to write essays or apply to college on their cell phones. Imagine using "Notes" to write and properly format a five page essay or a personal statement for a college application!
Equitable access to college requires equitable access to technology.
Help my students on their journey to college - give them the basic access they need to explore their futures and take their first steps toward postsecondary success.
