Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have been a teacher for almost 30 years, working in public Alternative Schools for the majority of those years. These are schools for the students who have fallen through the cracks. I have taught at Homeless Shelters for Youth, High School Credit Recovery classes, GED instruction, Adult Beginning Literacy, and more. Now, I am a Continuation High School Math/Science & all other academic subjects teacher, when needed. My students need a smaller work environment with more attention and understanding due to their behavioral, mental health, financial, and special needs challenges. I can have 15-25 students per period, which is much smaller than the traditional schools.

With this project, I am trying to provide not just a basic environment for them, but a beautiful classroom where they feel valued.

These are the kids, soon to be adults, that have not fit in, that have been rejected, that want to give up. The lack of resources for Continuation High School students can be felt on a daily basis. We are in scarcity mode, when these are the kids who need more. The funding we receive for our students from our district has not been able to provide even the basics for them. For example: headphones for those who cannot wear earbuds, dry erase markers that work, power cords for the Chromebooks needed in the classroom, color pencils with more than just primary colors.

With this project, I am asking for a few things to make the classroom run a little bit smoother, and feel a little less lacking. This is the first time I am asking for support on Donors Choose, and hope there are people and/or organizations that begin to search for my projects and learn more about Continuation High School students and their special needs.
