My Students

Every child can learn, and s/he deserves to experience knowledge through multiple ways. Multiple choice tests and writing samples are our current ways to assess, yet our students can also show their understanding of content through artistic collaboration and creation.

My students come from a high poverty area in California.

The school is a Title I school and lacks many resources that more affluent areas take for granted. Even though many of the parents of our students have multiple jobs, their families live below the national poverty line. Consequently, some students are unable to come up with even basic school supplies. A significant population of the students lack access to health care, and about 10% of the student population is either in foster homes or homeless. Nonetheless, these students are not dejected or giving up; they use school as a sanctuary from their struggles and battles.

My Project

The various art supplies (including markers, construction paper and newsprint) will add color, creativity and a chance to display the talent that my students have inside them. Guided by the state standards for English Language Arts (Grade 8), the students will connect to the content by working collaboratively and creatively. Their collaboration will help them reinforce their understanding of the material and build life long interpersonal skills. They will also work on individual personal projects to share their histories and connect to the content. The art supplies will be a vehicle that help my students and I travel back and forth between our daily lives and the material we study. Lastly, by displaying the works of my students around class, we will celebrate our talents and histories.

Everyday, my students face challenges that inner city settings bring with them- violence, poverty and fear.

The school is a safe haven for so many of these students who spend hours after school in attempts to delay problems that a poor household has in store for them. By capturing and sharing the obstacles of my students' past and present, we will march towards a more hopeful future. They will use art to work with their peers and display the universal themes of life.
