Help Ms. Keener

I teach in an urban middle school comprised of sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Our academic classes consist of three ninety-minute core classes and two forty-five minute electives. Art, music, shop, and gym are offered as electives to enhance math, language arts, science, and social studies. We are departmentalized by subject matter as well as teamed interdisciplinary. I teach the sixth grade science curriculum to students ranging in age from eleven through thirteen. Many of our students lack the funding for basic school supplies. Teachers as well as the school help out when possible. Through multiple hands-on experiences, students are engaged in writing, reading, calculation, and active communication of their thoughts and ideas about Science content which include core curricular subjects. With Science becoming one of the EOG requirements in upcoming years, students need to be engaged in multiple inquiry activities. With funding, inquiry could become priority within the science classroom provided that consumable resources are available. As a science department we are able to touch the lives of EVERY STUDENT that comes though the school. Consumable materials that are used within the classroom can place a strain on a teacher's budget. Some of the consumables would be used on such activities from designing the parts of a flower through making a model of how a lung works with the Diaphram in our human body. Some items would also be used in correlation with a greenhouse where the students would have access to a planting experience while learning about ecological systems! These activities would further students personal backgrounds! Content such as Energy, Rocks and minerals, Soil Profile, Lithosphere, Ecology, and Space exploration would be enhanced inquiry labs that would be implemented would further students' active engagement with science content as well as give at-risk students personal experiences that due to funding they might not be able to have! Our students need to see the importance of education as well as see a direct connection to their personal lives. This would further give student ownership within the learning process for it would take money out of the loop. When researching these ideals, I have found that there is a positive correlation of the integration of subject matter across the curriculum. The students were able to carry the subject matter and personal experiences to other classes and use the skills that they gained within other instructional classrooms. The activities that were utilized were reflective of real-life activities that the students could relate to their everyday life. This enabled the student to have repetition in the ideals that were being presented to them as well as have a better retention of the learned material. In conclusion, the availablity of consumable items would have a direct affect on EACH student of our school. Students that might not ever see a hope of school being in their future might, after being involved, see a scientific career in their future. After all, that is my job: to enhance the futures of others so they can be active stewards of our community- world. Thank you for your consideration within this grant process. The students and staff of Parker Middle school eagerly anticipate each new school year. This grant would be the positive kick-off that our school needs no matter when it is funded.
