My Students

My students are smart, curious, fun-loving, creative, hardworking, helpful, and kind. My 20 students represent countries all over the world, as well as learning levels from Kindergarten to fifth grade. Some of my students need daily intervention while others need daily enrichment.

My school consists of about 1,000 students of diverse backgrounds and diverse learning abilities.

We have a growing population of ELL students and students for which we implement interventions in reading and math, as well as students needing enrichment to acquire success for their educational needs.

Our school does not receive Title I funding; therefore, the technology that we have in our classroom is limited and has to be funded through other means. Our school has an amazing administration and staff who are dedicated to meet each of these diverse needs. The environment of our school is warm, nurturing, and respectful.

My Project

After visiting the Ron Clark Academy last spring (thanks to DonorsChoose.org), I learned some new and engaging teaching methods to motivate my second grade students. One of my biggest takeaways was learning about room transformations. I have already taught reading, math, and phonics lessons this year through transforming our classroom as a Glow Room using black lights and consumable glow-in-the-dark supplies.

With last year's class I had Text Feature Surgery Day, and my second graders wore gloves, surgery gowns and caps and became surgeons for the day as they creatively completed engaging learning activities.

The students love these lessons, but to teach them, I need to replenish the materials each year to continue the activities. We are also planning to do a construction themed room transformation that will allow students to use what they have learned after a unit of measurement lessons to complete a variety of learning tasks. They will measure tools using non-standard units like nuts & bolts, and they will also measure using standard units- inches & centimeters. They will build towers using blocks that have equations on them (some true equations/some false equations), and they will use a set of instructions to create and build a house.

I am requesting items such as hard hats, construction vests, and toy sets for the Construction Zone. For the Text Feature Surgery, I would love to have disposable gowns, gloves, and masks for the students to wear and batteries for Boogie Boards used by the doctors. For the Glow Room, I am requesting table cloths, a backdrop, glow tape, and other fun glow items. These transformations incorporate the state standards in all subject areas with fun-filled activities to make learning fun and students are completely engaged in their learning.
