My Students

Learning science can be made engaging, fun, and memorable, and does not have to be in a boring lecture-style format!

My students are a unique and diverse group of eighth graders in an environmental studies magnet school.

They are passionate and have a lot of potential, and like other kids their age, would love the opportunity to learn science through hands-on projects and collaboration with peers.

My Project

Imagine you are an 8th grader trying to understand the following concept by reading the text: "In a chemical reaction, the total mass of the substances formed by this reaction is equal to the total mass of the substances that reacted. This principle is called the law of conservation of mass, which states that matter is not created or destroyed during a chemical reaction". Now imagine you had the opportunity to actually engage in a hands-on laboratory activity and carry out a chemical experiment to see with your own eyes how matter is not created or destroyed during a chemical reaction. Wouldn't that make it easier to understand the concept? Having the necessary materials for this experiment will allow my students to be able to implement a scientific procedure and see how sodium hydrogen carbonate will react with hydrochloric acid. Students will practice other science skills, such as observing and inferring what happened to the mass of the reactants during the reaction.

This project also has an added sociocultural value because students will work in pairs.

Collaborating with peers to solve problems is an important 21st century skill, and through this activity, students will have an opportunity not only to make learning their own, but to also collaborate and learn from each other. Please help my students gain better conceptual understanding in science through an activity that will further spark their curiosity and interest in the subject.
