Connection, Growth Mindset, and Perseverance in Online Learning

Help me give my students opportunities for social connections. Since our students work from home by themselves except brief experiences on Zoom, we want to schedule monthly middle school meet-ups where students can come together and connect.

My Students

The students at Canyons Online chose online learning for a variety of reasons. We have two elite competitive soccer players who have trainings, games, and championships around the nation. We have a student who is spending half the year in India to help her mother care for the student's grandfather. We have students who have had difficult experience in traditional school settings due to mental or physical health challenges or disabilities that impact their ability to thrive in the overcrowded classrooms. We also have students who prefer to control their pace of learning and want to expand and contract the amount of time in each subject depending on their needs.

My Project

Our students learn primarily from home independently except brief experiences over Zoom. We want to give them a regular opportunity to come together and connect in person over board games so they can build their social skills, camaraderie, and connection.

I've also selected math materials to use during their live lessons to grow their mindset, their math concept, and their opportunity to build off of each other's strategies.

Lastly, I've selected a text that our students in English Language Arts will read that will help them understand human resilience and determination which could strengthen their mindset and achievement in all subject areas.
