Connecting with Coordinate Grids, Slopes, and Reflections in Math

My students need practice with hands-on math activities like movable X Y Axis Pegboards and the Algebra Kit in order practice learning about plotting points, coordinate grids, slope, expressions, rates and ratios and proportions.

My Students

My students are a wonderful group of middle years pre-teens. Many of them were born and raised in the inner city. They have a lot of energy and are willing to learn if they are challenged. In order to fully engage them, they need to have a variety of learning experiences. Over the past three years, the students have had an inconsistent instructional program due to various substitutes in the upper grades. As a result of this, they lack the confidence in their reasoning abilities and comprehension skills.

The students are not quick to accept just what adults tell them, but to question the rationale and reasons behind the tasks.

I love this inquisitive nature. We channel this with positive questioning techniques, so it isn't seen as defiance or disrespect. Their eagerness to learn, is what keeps me and my colleagues going (>90% staff attendance). It is because of them, that we all come to work everyday and do what we do with a smile on our faces.

My Project

Our students are capable of doing whatever they set their minds to doing. The opportunity for our children to thrive and learn in the math classroom is strengthened when we have the necessary tools for them to achieve. Manipulatives allow students to construct their own understanding of mathematical ideas and processes.

My students are more engaged when they are given multiple ways in which to learn express their understanding of mathematical concepts.

The items that I have selected will help my students thrive. The movable pegboards will support and enhance their learning of coordinate grids, slope and reflections. The hands-on Algebra classroom kit will support my 6th - 8th grade students when learning about expressions, integers and exponents in the math curriculum.
