My Project

My students are using AVID strategies to annotate what they read. They mark the text with what questions they have, what surprises them, what is important, what words they do not know, etc., This is a college level skill we practice to help them take ownership of their learning. We bring these annotations to discussion to share our understanding of the text and figure out the important parts of what we read. Color coding these annotations allows students to note what parts of the text are the most clear vs. the most confusing for their comprehension. Using these tools will make them academic annotators well beyond my classroom. As linguistically diverse students, we use this skill to show them that they can meet a confusing text half way and use their own knowledge and habits to better understand it.
