Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an English teacher at a charter school where over 75% of the students are Latino and most are low income. We are a college prep school, and our goal is to get 100% of our students to college. In order to do this, I need to ensure that my students are prepared to read texts from a variety of genres before they graduate so they are ready for college-level work. In my English class we read many novels, but also I want students to be able to read and comprehend informational material. I think I can best engage students with texts about current events. The book "Not on Our Watch" talks about the genocide that is occurring in Darfur. I think this is a great opportunity to engage students in an informational text that will also build their awareness of issues around the world. This book will lead well into a research project where students will pick a world issue to research and write about. Please help my students build these very important skills and help them learn more about important issues in the world around them!
