Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach math at our school in Elmhurst, Queens, NYC. We have wonderful students who are very interested in learning but do not have the financial means for the things they need. We are a Title I school and many of our students live in shelters, are newcomers, and or still recovering from the pandemic.

I want my students to connect reading with math so they become avid readers.

I have picked books in the mystery genre so my students can use their deductive reasoning skills and critical thinking skills. There is truth to the phrase, "the more we read, the more we know".

I have also picked out supplies so my students can work in collaborative groups. There are post-its so they can annotate what they are reading. There are dry erase markers so they can share ideas on their dry erase boards and colored pencils so they can illustrate their book review.
