Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom has 3 desktop computers that are outdated and very slow. There are two school computer labs, but it is very difficult to find a time that the labs are available. My students are in need to reliable technology that they can have access to all day, everyday, in the classroom.

I am a 4th grade teacher for 45 high poverty students.

I work in a Title I Renaissance school where over 90% of our students get free lunches. They come from very low income families where buying even everyday necessities can be difficult and at times impossible. If a student does have access to technology it is usually in the form of their parents' smartphone. For many of my students, English is their second language and they are below level in reading and math, and need extra support to help them make the necessary gains. My students are hard working and want to do well. I want to provide my students with experiences they will need to be successful in the future.

My Project

As in many classrooms, my students are working at many different levels. I have students are are mastering grade level standards who need to be challenged to extend their learning. Others need just a little extra practice in a different way to reinforce new skills. Still there are others that are still struggling to master past foundational skills. With these materials including two Chromebook laptops, USB mice and headphones, my students can be assigned tasks on their level in the form of instruction, practice and games. The portability of the laptops would give them the opportunity to sit somewhere in the room so that only they know what they are working on. If only they and I know what they are working on, they are more likely to do their best. In addition, students would be able to use the computers as another resource to read and do research on science topics. Giving them access to nonfiction text and more opportunities to engage them in reading will help them with vocabulary and comprehension.

As more of education is changing from paper based to computer based, students need many opportunities to use current technology.

I watch students slowly type responses on assessments because they don't know where the keys are. Having these laptops will allow me to get students more computer time so that they can become comfortable with these resources if they are to be successful in the future.
