Think of going to a school not understanding the language your teachers and peers speak. This is the experience each of my students experiences coming to my school.
My name is Charlie Silver and I am the CTE Computer Science teacher for English Language Learners (grades 3-11) at Doris Henderson Newcomers School in Greensboro, NC.
Our school serves immigrant and refugee children and their families transitioning into the American school system.
I am starting an Esports club to create an environment where:
1. Children will begin new friendships.
2. Families will come together as a community and watch their children participate in Esports tournaments.
3. Students will be introduced to various career pathways that are available under the Esports banner.
4. Social and emotional learning will be taught to help students better understand their thoughts and emotions, to become more self-aware, and to develop more empathy for others within their community and the world around them.
We currently have two Nintendo Switch gaming systems that are on loan from another teacher and myself. With your help, we will add another Nintendo Switch gaming system, a new game, controllers, HDMI cables, and power strips.
