Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the school year, we would like our students to be more engaged when it comes to learning. We intend to do this through Game-based Learning. The Xbox One and Kinect will make learning effective and fun because it will have a big impact on student engagement.

We are a third-grade class located in the South Bronx.

Our school is a Title I school located in a high needs area. Our class is comprised of general education students as well as students with Individual Education Plans. Our students are inquisitive and energetic. They are curious about the world around them and are always eager to learn new things.

My Project

The Kinect is an add-on accessory to the Xbox One, where gestures, voice, and motion control game functions. Our students will be able to play Kinect Sports Rivals which is a motion-based sports series. This game is controlled just with their body movements. This game tackles three important skills. They are Flexibility, Self-Control, and Focus Skills. It will also refine motor skills because players will have to repeat movements at the right time. It will help our students to adapt and adjust to new situations and find different ways to tackle a problem. Each activity will use different gestures to create a strategy to be successful in the game. Monopoly Family Game will help our students with math skills, finance, and investing. The students will also know the difference between short and long term investing, and risks/rewards. This will also help them work together and make decisions.

In our school, we are looking for different and interesting ways to increase student engagement.

We would like to motivate our students by using game-based learning with the use of the Xbox One and Kinect. The Kinect will physically involve the player in gameplay. According to John Medina of BrainRules, "exercise boosts oxygen-rich blood flow to the brain, which helps students concentrate better." This will change our students' lives because we do not have a school gym.
