My Students

Students at our middle school come from diverse backgrounds. With over 75% of our students on free and reduced lunch, they come to school with a broad range of challenges. Students and community members are unique in the fact that they take pride in their community and support each other. Often the people of Barberton who are born and raised here choose to stay here. The students running cross country this season just need help staying motivated and this gives them something to work towards!

My Project

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields are rapidly growing in today's workforce and the need for students to be adequately trained in these areas is essential. My job as the STEM teacher at Barberton Middle School is to prepare meaningful STEM experiences and to prepare students for their future successes. In a school district in which 71% of students are on free and reduced lunch, students often do not have access to the types of technology and resources that would prepare them for these successes at home. This makes it even more essential that we provide them with these experiences at school.

In order to have the necessary technological skills to become a valuable asset in the fields of STEM and to be competitive in the future workforce, my students need greater access to technology that will allow them to explore and create through hands-on experiences.

A Makey Makey is a system using a series of circuits where students can code and invent anything that they can think of. From a guitar to a robot, they can write the code and watch it in action. Utilizing technology to enhance academic growth, excitement and creativity is essential for my students.
