Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at an alternative high school in New York City. Many of our students are older and come from environments that did not meet their needs as learners. We strive to create a school community that recognizes the multitude of experiences and talents that each student brings to the classroom.

Many of our students are court-involved or suffer the stigma of having an incarcerated parent.

They have all been impacted by the criminal justice system in some way. They deserve the opportunity to share their stories and voice their concerns. After all, the youth who are directly affected by this problem have the creativity and the drive to imagine solutions.

And although they have drive and imagination, our students also have very adult responsibilities. They struggle economically and, in turn, academically. But they also have a profound understanding of their own experiences and extraordinary insight into the world around them. And their energy is the stuff that movements are made of.

My Project

My students have been inspired by the nation-wide youth movement to confront, and do away with, the violence that has plagued our country. Many of them took part in a walkout to demand laws that keep students and their families safer. I want to build on that momentum and continue a conversation about violence that is solution-oriented.

I want to give my students an opportunity to come up with their own ideas to address the violence that they've witnessed or experienced, using the novel Long Way Down as tool to do that.

During classroom conversations about a novel, I've noticed that students often relate to characters who are impacted by violence. They will sometimes share their own experiences and reveal a systemic issue that seems so overwhelming. But my students are also problem-solvers at heart. And when provided with the space to do so, they can confront and tackle issues as if they were social scientists. And they are, as we've seen in these past few weeks.

The author Jason Reynolds does not disappoint. And, in writing Long Way Down, has crafted a powerful and timely story about the ways in which young people internalize cultural norms around violence, but also have the strength to dismantle many of those learned behaviors. I hope you will support my students in addressing this important issue that impacts us all, regardless of background. And who knows, perhaps the conversations we have with them today could be the impetus for the positive changes they will make in the future.
