Many of our special needs children are deprived of the opportunity to read good literature. Since our kids live in Coney Island they are thrilled to have the chance to see their neighborhood come alive in print!
Our students are economically and culturally disadvantaged and they are very excited when their horizons are expanded through reading that is easy to relate to and identifiable to their own lives. They also need high-interest low-readability books.
We need 12 copies of the author's book so that our students can read in small groups and become familiar with works before we can schedule an author visit.
Our students enthusiastically await the arrival of these books because they have seen the picture of Coney Island on the cover and they recognize their community and cannot wait to read all about it!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
