My Project

We spend a third grader's whole life teaching that 4 is bigger than 2. Then we introduce them to fractions and they feel lost because now everything is backwards. A one-fourth size piece is smaller than a one-half size piece. How does that make sense?

Mastering the conceptual understanding of the denominator is key to success in mathematics!

Once students truly understand the denominator, they can manipulate fraction comparisons and equivalent fractions with ease. While there are many concrete examples in the world of fractions, nothing is as spell-binding as Hershey bars to teach one-half, one-third, one-forth, or one-sixth.

Help me grab my students' attention using a medium that reenforces the idea of equal parts AND denominators simultaneously.
