A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Do you remember dreaming about a senior trip and your high school graduation? I am the senior class adviser, and my eager seniors are trying to raise funds to have the senior year of their dreams.
Our school is located in rural Alaska.
There are no roads in or out of the village and we must fly to go anywhere. Most of my students live under the poverty line and struggle to realize that their dreams can become reality. The seniors this year are the hardest working students I have had since starting to teach at the school 3 years ago. They have big dreams and are working hard to have movie nights, basketball tournaments, and other fun activities for the community. There is not much for students to do in such a small community. The impact the seniors are having on the community, while also raising their own money, is amazing!
My Project
My students are very creative in coming up with ways to raise money. They want to get a new popcorn machine because popcorn has been our biggest money maker in the few events we have done. Our school currently has a popcorn machine that is very old, but it has not been working very well this year. We think it might be about 20-30 years old. It served it's purpose, but we are in need of a new one and do not have the funds to purchase it. We also need a snow-cone maker and accessories.
Through this fundraising our students are learning very valuable business skills. They are learning how much product to buy, what to spend their money on, how to organize events, how to advertise, and many other valuable skills that go into running a business. These are skills that they have learned in school, but now they are being required to practice and use them in the real world.
My students are learning the value of hard work.
They are very eager to work, and thrive with every chance they are given. Not everything has gone perfectly, but they are learning from their mistakes and making better decisions for each event they host. They are growing each and every day, and their confidence is building. I am so proud of them, and believe they deserve the hope for a better future.
