Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a low socioeconomic area. Many of my students have been in foster care. They struggle with reading and math concepts. These students have a difficult time feeling successful. They are always lacking basic classroom supplies. We have recently incorporated technology into our classroom, both in and out of school. It's hard to believe in this computer-driven society, but many of my students do not have access to computers at home and even in school.

Our school has created smaller class sizes in hopes this will give more attention to each student, but with this benefit comes setbacks.

We have more teachers than the budget allows, so our funding is limited. Our computers are old and beginning to break down. Having some new computers, specifically for my students, would be unbelievable. We would use them for many projects, as well as i-Ready ELA and Math, which has been proven to increase student reading and math knowledge. It's set up to individualize each student's learning. It rewards students with tokens to play online games. I, as a teacher, can observe each student's progress and assign individual lessons. DonorsChoose could allow this opportunity to occur.

My Project

The ten Chromebooks and the headphones will be used every day in our math classes to support students with math. Students will be on i-Ready Math, which our school purchased for every student, and Tenmarks daily. If a student is struggling with a concept, the i-Ready Math gives tutorials, practice, exams, and keeps the teacher informed of all students. The program even stops teaching a topic of the student cannot handle it and informs the teacher. We will also use the Chromebooks for projects, such as finding sale prices by using percents, banking, and other everyday math assignments. The students will never have to be concerned that the computers are not working or the battery is dead because of other students using them that day.
