This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title 1 Performing Arts Public High School in the Bronx filled with a group of energetic, creative, and talented young performing artists and budding playwrights. They come to my class with bright and innovative ideas and an eagerness to immerse themselves in the world of the theater.

Our school aims to provide our students with a multitude of opportunities that allows them to share these artistic talents.

But, as an underfunded art school in an underserved community, we lack the resources to purchase rights to published plays and musicals. We therefore must think outside the box and create our own pathways to performance, which comes in the form of student-written original works.

My Project

I am requesting your help in funding 10 Chromebooks to fill a major gap in my students' educational toolbox. The computers will be used for collaborative writing projects that will culminate in student performances of their original works for both the school and community. These computers will also provide a means for online research and be made available to students who do not otherwise have access to the internet or computers at home.

While our school does have a limited number of computers, they are shared among multiple classrooms and are not guaranteed to be available for daily use.

Furthermore, the computers we do have are slow, do not consistently operate properly, are missing essential parts (such as keys and parts of the exterior), and require frequent maintenance. Our students need reliable technology to complete their assignments.

These Chromebooks will help incorporate much needed technology into the classroom, and it will enable my students to acquire the skills needed to thrive in the 21st century.
