Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being an adolescent and leaving your family and country to make the journey to the US because your life has been threatened and you are fleeing violence. Making the dangerous journey alone, you experience violence and often sexual assault. Then you are detained as an unaccompanied minor and begin the legal process to obtain political asylum status. You didn't have much schooling after 6th grade because your family couldn't afford it or you had interrupted schooling throughout your life. Now, you must struggle to survive in a foreign language and school. This is the reality of the resilient students that I had the privilege of teaching last year and this year.

My students risked their lives for the American Dream and I want to provide them with all the opportunities possible to become their best self and achieve their dreams here.

They want to be successful students and be able to contribute to their families and communities. And while our country is polarized around immigration, I think we can agree that all young people deserve a safe community to grow up in and an education that allows them to develop their abilities and reach their potential.

My Project

I plan on using the chromebooks to allow for more differentiated and personalized learning in my classroom. This means students will rotate through different stations in a class period, and the stations will include activities that are done independently, in small groups, using technology and with me. This way students are writing, reading, speaking and listening to English through a variety of different formats and activities. This keeps learning enjoyable and provides opportunities for all types of learners to access English.

Using technology in the classroom will enable my students to become more independent learners, strengthen their English and develop the skills needed in this digital era.

I am teaching 10th graders (that I had last year as 9th graders), and most of them had never used a computer prior to last year. Not only will computers aid in developing their English, but they will be learning how to access information on the internet, use Google products, and create email accounts.
