Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

HSHM is a high needs public NYC high school focused on preparing students in hospitality and tourism careers.

Our small school is comprised of around 400 students, many of whom commute long distances from their bilingual households and receive free or reduced lunch.

We have a large population of students who are classified as special education and/or ESL and work hard to support their needs.

Students often come into HSHM not having all the skills they need to be successful in high school. These students are supported through after school and Saturday tutoring and through the work of their very dedicated teachers and staff.

My Project

In this course, students collaborate frequently and express their ideas and solutions to one another. In order to do this, we need poster paper to allow for ideas to be shared and kept in the classroom as a display of previous learnings. Additionally, we do several units of coding where students have to debug their work and problem solve. In an effort to promote "rubber ducky debugging" (where individuals talk through their code and find errors), I give my students rubber duckies frequently throughout the class. This also motivates students to attend class as they receive special rewards like rubber duckies! Finally, students participate in a lot of different logic problems, that utilize different resources like legos and games. All of these items will be incredibly useful to engage my students and get them excited about a field that is so often underrepresented by individuals like them.
