Computer Science Hands-On!

Help me give my students some hands-on ways to explore computer science: binary dice (that roll only 1 or 0!), flashlights (to simulate transmission of bits through pulses of light), bead-based "pixel art" ... and more!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching 'Introduction to Computer Science' to high school students is very rewarding: unlike myself, who remembers his first computer in 1984 at the age of 9 (and certainly no internet!), these students have all grown up in an always-on, internet-enabled, supercomputer-in-their pockets digital age.

My students are inquisitive, intelligent and eager to learn.

They also want to explore in tangible and hands-on ways what makes their computers work: from the 1s and 0s, to logical thinking, algorithms, websites, ASCII encoding, HTML and much more. These scholars explore not only the logical and mathematical ideas inherent in computer science, but are also engaged in real-world visualizations of these concepts.

My Project

I encourage my scholars to learn computer science through critical thinking, exploration and hands-on visualization of the concepts.

I'd like to have a class set of flashlights so that they can practice pulsing 1s and 0s to transmit binary data; I'd love to have binary dice so that they can organize 1s and 0s into chains to encode messages...

I encourage an inclusive classroom and focus on the leading ladies - Ada Lovelace, Grace Hopper, Katherine Hopper to name but a few - to make sure that we encourage more young ladies into Computer Science.

My goal is to relate computer science concepts to hands-on activities so that students visualize, learn and get to engage in their own understanding of the fundamentals of computer science.
