Our 6th-8th grade students are currently studying computer science to program websites, video games and apps at Roots International Academy in Oakland.
At Roots, our school vision is to guide students toward developing into whole, happy critical thinkers and future leaders.
Our students are energetic and eager to learn because we promote a growth mindset. We teach our students to keep an open mind in learning as they collaborate and persist in solving high impact problems.
Our students are currently working on their final projects, but a majority of them still do not have access to a computer at home. We would like to support these families by awarding computers to promising students who show potential in making a difference in their communities.
My Project
With new laptop computers, our students will be able to access online resources to further their education from home. Students can utilize online programs such as Code.org and complete Google Classroom assignments to assess their learning.
Our students are learning computer science to create websites and share their newest projects with the world!
Students have designed inspiring games and apps to solve problems in their communities. These computers will help them work to turn their ideas and dreams into reality.
New laptop computers will also enable our students to prepare for college. With access to a computer at home, students can learn more about English, Math, Science and History. These laptops will unlock doors and present new opportunities for our students in the future.
As the Computer Science teacher at our school, I hope we can collaborate together to address this equity issue in education and help create a brighter future tomorrow.
