Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My physics classroom is a special place for everyone from the nerdiest math student to the secret artist. Math students enjoy applying their skills to complex, real world situations. Creative students and future engineers innovate with recycled materials to build anything from music instruments to balloon race cars to beautiful roller coasters made of paper. Even the kids who hate math enjoy physics because of the discussions about the world around them. They stop and wonder a little more than they used to. And for the kids who aren't "good at anything", they enjoy the class too. I can tell because they always come back with a wistful look in their eye.

They enjoyed getting caught up in it all: being a member of a team, listening in to the wacky and nerdy science conversations, and laughing at all of the bad jokes.

This year we had our first science fair where a pair of students learned about Arduinos, which naturally meant that I would too. Coding opens up even more opportunities for learning, for fun, and more importantly, for future careers.

My Project

Students are relying more and more on technology these days than ever before. Teaching them about technology through computer science allows them to take an active role in the world around them. It potentially could even create a career path instead of just letting them fall behind to be a bystander or a passive observer. This is especially important for my students which are all English Language Learners and Latinos. Sometimes, my students feel a certain hopelessness.

I would like to learn computer science so that I can empower them.

This year we learned how to make simple apps on our phones in addition to learning about programming Arduinos. There was something so instantly gratifying about creating a program and testing it out. It was addictive. Thanks for coordinating this event, CSTA!
