My Students

This year, I focused my technology education classes on developing my students' knowledge of computer science. Teaching code over the course of this year, my students have become technology producers rather than consumers. Their biggest challenge is access to the technology to hone this skill.

My students are in grades 3, 4, and 5.

I see each class one time a week for technology education. The majority of the population is from low income housing. We are a title I school with 100% free lunch. My students look forward to coming to technology class because they lack access to the resources I teach with in their homes. The technology education I provide my students with is their sole means of getting college and career ready at the elementary level.

My Project

At present, my students can code. Additionally, my students are developing a love for this science. By providing my classes with Makey Makey sets, they will further develop their computer science skills. They will be able to use their coding skills to create innovative and interactive programs. Makey Makey kits will help my students bridge the connection between what they are learning with how they can use it in real life to invent, create and solve problems. They will learn to take the computer science skills they have acquired to solve a problem and create a product. For example, students will create a program in Scratch and use the Makey Makey kit to make the program work with everyday objects.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom.

My students will master computer science skills. These tools will help my students think critically and with purpose, skills needed to be lifelong learners. The project as a whole, will open an area of science to my students that would otherwise be unavailable, giving my students the opportunity to see a career path and an opportunity to excel within it.
