My Students

We are a small school in New York City with a diverse population. Our students come from all parts of the world, and in a lot of cases, English is their second language. As a result, words can sometimes be misunderstood. However, the rich cultural experiences that we share together as a class are priceless.

We are constantly looking for ways to enrich our learning environment creating special projects that embrace all levels of scholastic ability and interests.

We especially love STEM activities like robotics, computer coding, and 3-D modeling, but in addition, we also enjoy exploring specialty topics, such as the fine arts, foreign languages, and the Debate Club. We try to make every day an exciting learning experience.

My Project

In this day and age, all students should have the necessary skills to understand the technology unfolding around them. To this end, I believe programming skills are something that can be learned at a very early age, and I would like my students to have the opportunity to experience programming and using robots within our classroom setting.

Using recycled materials in conjunction with their robot kits, my students will create inventions to solve everyday problems.

Every year, my students participate in the Exploravision Contest. This contest gives them the chance to come up with out-of-the-box inventions to tackle everyday problems - e.g. solar powered computer desks. The students utilize materials found in our classroom (especially recycled boxes) to create their inventions. This year, I would like to include a programming component to their challenge. Students will learn robotics principles by constructing Raspberry PI kits, and learning to program them. In addition, using the project programming book, and through hands-on learning, students will complete a series of progressively more difficult problems for which they must use their robots as a solution.
