Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Welcome to Room 44! As we enter, my students make a daily pledge to themselves about the kind of person they want to grown into. This helps to center themselves and focus on what steps they can take today to make their future more than a dream, but a reality.

Our school is a Title I school serving a largely immigrant Latino population in one of the most densely populated cities west of the Mississippi.

Most of my students' daily experience is to witness family and community members working long hours in manual labor jobs. They are statistically destined to dropout before they complete high school. My challenge is to focus them on aspiring higher and forging a path that may not be familiar. My students aspire to go beyond the stereotypes and expectations of people in our community and be the first college graduates in their families. The majority of my students and their families are struggling to get by. Homelessness, job cuts, hunger, and crowded homes are among the difficulties they face. They are abundantly aware of how money (or the lack thereof) creates real problems. With all of this, they are abundantly happy and eager learners striving to make their future full of opportunities.

My Project

These Chromebooks will change our classroom! We currently have one outdated computer for an entire class. By having multiple computers, my students will be able to take turns at the computer station. They will be able to type and publish their personal writing using Google Docs. This will give them great experience with developing typing skills. They will be able to use the computers for research, reading support, and math practice. But, to really push the envelope, we want to to use these as tools to learn new computer programming skills. The future is going to emphasize heavily on technology careers and those are available to those who have specific skills. My students face many disadvantages, I want to provide them with an advantage that will give them inroads to success. We will be focusing on coding programs on code.org and khanacademy.org. By working in teams, they will problem solve in fun ways that push them to use coding that feels like play. It's a game-changer for them.

The future is technology, but it has to be technology with a purpose.

My students will be able to use our Chromebooks to access a previously closed off and unfamiliar realm: computer programming. By tapping into this area at a young age, they become comfortable and able to master skills that they can foster and develop in the future. My students will see the importance of math and science in their daily lives. These game-changers will help them create new opportunities for themselves.
