My Students

Our school is located in Los Angeles, California. We are a Title I school. Our students receive free meals and almost all of our students are students of color and English learners.

We are a 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th-grade special education classroom; my students are on the Autism Spectrum.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that affects learning, communication, and behavior. Students with autism also face challenges with social skills and self-management. Some students have limited language and may exhibit challenging behaviors. This is all apparent in our classroom.

My goal is to give these students the hands-on, real-world, and enriching learning experiences, both academic and nonacademic, that they need and deserve in order to succeed in and outside of the classroom. I strongly believe in building independence and ownership at an early age.

My Project

My students were all given Chromebooks this year and it has made such a huge difference in their learning. At first, we struggled daily with remembering log in information, how to log in, and how to navigate their devices. After persistent practice and consistent use of their devices, they are able to use their Chromebook to enhance their learning and production of work. It is normal for my students to take a bit longer than their peers to learn new skills, so we celebrate every achievement, no matter how small it may be. It was just a few months ago when using Chromebooks was a great struggle for the majority of my students, but I can't imagine our time spent together without them!

My students would greatly benefit from using a wireless USB computer mouse and headphones.

The mouse pad on their Chromebooks is too small even for their little fingers. They often attempt to click on certain things, but click on the wrong side of their mouse pad since there is not a concrete visual or where the left and right side starts and ends. This may not be a common problem for upper elementary students, but it is for my neurodivergent learners.

Headphones would allow my students to complete more independent work and help reduce any auditory distractions. These two accessories would help my students immensely while they are using their Chromebooks in class.
