Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Technology is the key to our future, so what does that mean for the students who cannot access it? It means it lessens their likelihood to succeed.

My students attend a charter school in the Bronx.

They are all in special education and struggle academically either due to attention problems or a language barrier. Despite this, my students amaze me because they all try their best every day. Each and everyone of them have vibrant personalities. You just can't help but to love them. They also have big goals such as going to college and working for NASA.

My Project

These laptops are important because it will give my kids a chance to learn how to use a computer for academic purposes. This past week I assigned an essay project and to my horror many students did not have email addresses, know how to type or make a file folder. Yes, they know how to tweet and update their Facebook statuses but they don't have the skills to use the computer for academic reasons. Also, many of my students do not have a working computer at home. As future college students I want them to have a working knowledge of the computer and word processors. The computers will be used to do keyboarding lessons, as well as typing essays during class and after school for those who do not have one. My ELL's will use the computers during pre-reading activities so they can gain background knowledge on the work we are reading.

As a teacher, my goal is to prepare my students for college.

Knowing how to use a computer efficiently will greatly improve their experience as writers and readers. My ultimate goal for my students is for them not to be burdened due to a lack of resources. They need to be able to type essays in class and work on projects, as well as build their computer skills to prepare for college.
