Computer Club Robotics Class

My students need more robot construction sets for our computer club so each pair can create their own individual construction set using their own creativity and program their robots accordingly.

My Students

I teach a technology class to students in grades 2-5. My students come from many backgrounds as do most of the children in the New York City public school system. From my several years of teaching I always encounter some students that quickly learn and master the concepts I teach; these students usually become helpers and technology ambassadors to their peers. While there are others that need more time and further assistance, I came to the understanding that students sometimes learn better from other students.

As a result I created a computer club, intended for students that are more technologically advanced and show interest in programing and computer hardware.

Although all students are welcome to join, it was created for students that seek even more knowledge and hands on activities outside of the scope of the current curriculum. We are seeking funding for STEM oriented kits and instructional material for these students to master and spread their knowledge to their peers.

My Project

This project will help my computer club students learn how to create and write computer code for their constructor sets. They will then take this knowledge to then disseminate the information to the rest of the fifth grade classes in my school.

The overall goal is to challenge students to enter their first Lego League union competition where teams of 2-6 children ages 6-9 solve real-world challenges building their solution with LEGO bricks.

Teams learn about science and engineering as they build a model using the LEGO® Education WeDo, and build their communication skills as they present information on a Show Me poster.
