Computer Blitz

My students need two laptop computers to work on class projects, research and write assignments. Currently they have no access to a computer in the classroom.

My Students

The 5th and 6th graders in my school are tech savvy but lack computers in their classrooms. There is one computer lab that must be shared by the entire school of 1100 students. When a teacher attempts to include a component in their lesson requiring a computer, they must make an appointment to use the lab. Time in the lab is limited to one 45 minute period. Sometimes the lab is not available for weeks. This is frustrating for both the teachers and students.

We are motivated to use technology in the classroom.

Our students have had the opportunity to research projects, learn about music and practice their math skills using a variety of websites and software available in the computer lab. They hunger for the chance to use technology in their everyday learning

My Project

The addition of laptops to the classroom will increase my students ability to do online research, participate in school and community sponsored web-based activities, increase their skills in math and ELA through computer based learning. Currently my school has one computer lab servicing 1200 students. By having two computers in the classroom, students may also continue work independently, after beginning the lesson in the lab. My ability to differentiate instruction will increase tenfold. I am hoping to start small and build a computer learning area in a corner of my room. I also have access codes for my students to participate in a college-based curriculum called Berklee Pulse. Many of them have internet access at home through phones and small devices. This makes it difficult to utilize programs requiring a larger screen. Having computers in the classroom will allow my students to participate fully in Berklee Pulse curriculum.
