This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Resource teacher at a school that is located in the southern part of the Bronx. I serve students from Kindergarten to sixth grade who are struggling with basic reading concepts. Many of my students read for decoding, not for understanding. When they finish reading a sentence to me, most of them are unable to tell me what they've just read. I am using an excellent decoding program with these students. However, my job is to make comprehension the goal. My students need to understand that reading can be enjoyable and not just tedious and difficult.
Many times, I see that my students are not able to recall what the main idea of the story was. They are unable to tell me what are the most important details. They especially have a hard time inferring the reading to their own life experiences or other stories they have read. As a Resource teacher, I am obligated to pick up as many as eight students per group. This makes it difficult to differentiate instruction by giving each student exactly what he needs.
This comprehension kit would be perfect for my students. I would be able to target my instruction to individual needs. Each activity card concentrates on a specific goal. I see about six groups a day for about fifty minutes. The whole purpose of sending children to the Resource room is to give them exactly what they need. By assessing my students and targeting what their weeknesses are, I will be able to match a student to a skill that they are lacking. While working with a group that needs a different skill, some children will use these comprehension cards that target exactly what they lack.
