Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember being a kid and playing in the dirt? My students love poking around in the dirt and looking at worms, lizards and other creepy crawlers. They enjoy hands-on activities that help them discover and learn new concepts. This curiosity will help me Teach for the Planet.

Our school is in a large urban school district where 100% of our students qualify for free lunch.

I currently teach a 4th grade class of English language learners that are bright and eager to learn. My students love to be involved in projects, in both, our school and the community. Every year, we celebrate Cesar Chavez's legacy by having a 'School Beautification, Day of Service' volunteer day. The students and staff at our school take great pride in making our school a more beautiful place. In the past, we have planted a reading garden and painted murals around our school. How wonderful would it be if my students contributed to our annual 'Day of Service' by donating rich, composted soil to the various gardens that have been planted around our school? And then, created a PowerPoint slideshow to show what they learned about decomposition?

My Project

I am requesting 1 composter to learn about decomposition and 1 Chromebook laptop to write about it. I would like to give my students the opportunity to set up a composting bin as part of our 4th grade science unit. They would learn first-hand what happens to organic waste and how it can be reused to replenish the soil with nutrients. Our school had a composting bin in the past, but unfortunately, it was vandalized during the summer. I would also like for my students to create a PowerPoint presentation about what they learned. They would share their work with other students. Their oral presentations combined with their PowerPoint would give them opportunities to practice the academic language they acquired during this unit of study. The problem is, we only have access to the computer lab for 30 minutes every two weeks. This is not enough time for my students to work on their presentations. Which is why, I would like for them to have access to a computer in the classroom. I would be able to schedule daily blocks of time for students to work on their projects.

Working with a composter and witnessing first-hand how organic materials decompose will give my students direct experiences with and many opportunities to learn about nature.

Giving my students access to technology in the classroom will help prepare them with 21st century skills such as sharing documents, creating presentations and evaluating resources online.
