Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a small public elementary school in the Bronx, NY. Our school is committed to providing all students with a well-rounded curriculum that engages students in hands-on, project-based learning as well as developing social skills and building character.

50% of our student population are from low-income families.

We work hard to ensure that economics doesn't get in the way of a quality education. Our students are eager to learn. They need a hand up not a hand out.

My Project

Reading is such a complex process and phenomena that we take for granted. However, many students are lacking the skills to fully comprehend what they are reading. This comprehension bundle kit will allow me to differentiate instruction for my students and give them strategically, authentic learning experiences to help them progress and succeed as readers.

Without comprehension, reading has no meaning.

Students are missing out on the joy and purpose of reading which is to unlock the meaning of the written word. In order for students to meet the demands of our changing world, they must be able to understand what they read. The goal is to have students develop the knowledge, skills, and experiences that will help them open the world of possibilities through reading.

This kit will provide everything I need to assess, evaluate and teach purposefully. Students will work on the skills they need by setting goals, close monitoring of the goals to ensure the goals are met. The kit includes authentic trade books that range in levels to meet the diverse needs of students in my classroom.

Small group instruction will be authentic, meaningful practice and not focus on handouts or poor quality resources often used to support our neediest students. As a teacher, having this resource will have a profound impact on the quality and consistency of the small group instruction that is provided to my students. Jen Serravallo is a true educator at heart and understands what teachers need to help make this challenging yet rewarding job just a little bit easier. This comprehension kit will make a huge difference and impact in the reading lives of my students by allowing me to teach explicitly, intensively and persistently.
