Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Competitive Dance Team Director at a public senior high school. The student demographics consist of the following: 54% Hispanic, 41% Black, and 5% White. We are categorized as a Title I school with 84.1% free or reduced-price lunch. The area surrounding the school is a mix of low-income families and government housing. The neighborhood close to the school has a violent reputation with crimes being committed and drug use. Many of our students are homeless, in foster care, or have emotional issues from their upbringing. Many of these students are assigned to a therapist to help them adjust to school life. The Dance Program is a positive outlet for them.

The Dance Team consists of competitive dancers that promote school spirit, develop self-esteem and physical fitness.

The students in my school enjoy participating and performing in the Football & Basketball games. I am looking to help my students train to their best potential. My students are missing out on participating and in competing because their parents cannot afford the extra expense of the event attire. Our students try their best in their academic classes in order to maintain a specific grade point average.

My Project

My students are competitive dancers on the Dance Team that perform at pep rallies, football & basketball games. The competitive dancers also appear at dance competitions, Miami Heat Games, and other prestigious events. They are in need of biker shorts that are appropriate for public appearances. The dancers train on a daily basis to achieve their best potential. They develop flexibility, strength, and performance qualities.

The Dance Team members are competitive dancers that promote school spirit and are positive role models.

This experience will help students develop self-confidence, gain leadership qualities, and physical fitness.
