My Students

My robotics team is made up of the most incredible students. In the three years that we have competed in the VEX Robotics Competition, I have been amazed at the growth they have shown. They have quickly transitioned from, "Can we build a robot?" to "Let's make the best robot in the state!"

My student's achievements are even more incredible when you consider the demographics of our school.

We are a small neighborhood highschool with about 350 students. Of those students, over 60% of them qualify for free or reduced lunch. My team has always been diverse in terms of age, gender, race, and income level, and it is incredible to see how they work together. They have also developed great friendships.

The biggest thing I can give my students is the confidence that they are capable of great things. I want them to feel like they have an equal right to dream big. I hope that robotics inspires them to pursue careers in STEM fields, or at the very least teaches them that they can do amazing things in math and science.

My Project

Competitive robotics is one of the best ways of teaching math and science skills in a fun and practical way. In my after-school robotics club students learn about mechanics, torque, ratios, logical thinking, basic programming, optimization, graphing, and more. At the same time they are also learning important lessons in accountability, teamwork, prioritization, goal setting, and sportsmanship. Over the past few years, we have competed in the VEX Robotics Competition and learned about as well as our resources will allow, meeting goals that others would never have expected from our students.

My students have responded to this success by raising the bar even higher, setting new and more challenging goals for themselves, and every year they commit more of their time after school to the club.

They want to not only compete, but to do their absolute best. This project would fund the purchase of an official VEX field. This field would allow us to test our programs in the actual environment the robots will compete in. Our programmers will be able to write programs with a higher precision and accuracy, and our drivers will be able to simulate realistic situations that require critical thinking. We would be able to better apply the engineering design process, along with mathematical modeling and scientific testing, to maximize our robot performance.

The vast majority of the top teams in the state have regular access to a field. We have managed to be among the top 10 teams in the state practicing on a field pieced together from old textbooks and scrap pieces of wood. A real field would have a major impact. Having a regulation field would also allow us to collaborate with other schools to host competitions and provide more opportunities for our students to compete.
