This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is life! Unfortunately, many of my long-term English learners (LTELs) have not found a passion for​ reading, however, I want to continue to change that in every way possible. LTELs are students who have been in the American school system for more than six years and are not considered proficient in English. I've had most of the students as 6th graders in English Language Development (ELD), and now I have them again as 7th/8th graders so I know them fairly well-- academic and personal histories. They have their share of struggles but they are resilient, compassionate, and good-natured.

Books are so important in their development as readers, writers, and thinkers.

Many of them do not have access to books at home or even a quiet place to read. The reading they do is mostly done in the classroom. I think with the right book they will be motivated to read on their own. Reading will help them progress.

My Project

It is so important for English language learners to read regularly. These books will be used to read and discuss together in the classroom. Each student will have their own copies of Red Glass and The Only Road so that they can follow along while we read together. They will read aloud to work on fluency and build reading comprehension.

They will learn about a world bigger than theirs, and hopefully, motivate them to read as a result.

The titles have been chosen with my students in mind-- I believe these novels will not only pique​ their interest and build compassion, but students will also relate to the characters and themes featured.
