My classroom is filled with a diverse range of students from different cultures, some with disabilities, some in the process of developing their English skills, and some simply returning for another school year. Compassion is the centerpiece of our classroom and is woven throughout daily activities. On day one, students are given the opportunity to decorate the classroom, and represent their cultures. Decorating the classroom can be a transformative project that fosters creativity and compassion among elementary students. We can teach them to see the world through the eyes of others and work toward alleviating suffering.
They will work with one another to understand the meaning behind being compassionate as they use these resources to decorate their classroom.
In collaborating with one another, the teacher will complete check ins to find out what they have learned about each other and how this can be used throughout the school year to create bonding experiences and a baseline for compassion. In thinking about cultural awareness, students will use the decoration supplies to customize their desks and show compassion to others by assisting other students in designing learning spaces. The teacher will be measuring these successes by having conversations with students about being compassionate and how they can learn more about each other by collaborating on projects such as this.
Students will design posters and decorations with positive, encouraging messages to be displayed around the classroom. These can serve as daily reminders to support and uplift each other.
Regular discussions will be held where students can share their experiences and insights from the project. Feedback from these discussions will provide a measure of their growing empathy and compassion.
By combining these activities with the supplies in this project, students will learn compassion organically and thoroughly as a great start to our school year.
