Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Compassion is an essential element to humankind, which is seeing life through another’s point of view and not doing anything to hurt. But most importantly compassion is helping others who are suffering or in need. My class has had a hard time with tattling, getting others in trouble, lying, classmates ignoring one student for weeks, and physical conflicts with others. This includes within the classes and also with other grades. We have had class conversations but my students are first graders and have a lot to learn.

I plan to explicitly teach students about compassion with mini lessons that begin with a book and end with a picture sort.

That is why I am requesting books of various topics such as anti-bullying and I am requesting a TpT gift card so I can supplement the mini lessons with hands-on activities. Books are a powerful way to teach students to view the world through someone else’s point of view. Identifying the feelings others are feeling and understanding them is a way I hope to teach my students to be more compassionate.

I am requesting the couch to have a place where students can have restorative conversations. This is where I will ask students to help others that they have hurt or who are suffering. Perhaps this will be by drawing a picture since my students are beginner writers which is why I am requesting the lap desk so students can use it while sitting on the couch.

I hope to measure their success when I see less conflict in and out of the classroom. I plan on making an anchor chart where I will record acts of kindness. With this anchor chart we can see what types of actions have led to students being more compassionate.
