As a 7th grade teacher, my students are going through a lot of changes while attempting to figure out their own emotions. It's often challenging for them to regulate and think about the needs and struggles that others might be facing.
Activities about compassion can help cultivate an emotionally safe environment and ease the way students are feeling and enable them to focus on their learning.
These items are essential hygiene products, snacks, and furniture to organize all the requested items create a compassion closet for students to retrieve various things they may need.
This compassion closet will be run by a student committee. Weekly, students will restock the items, which is open for all students on our team to access whenever needed. By creating this experience of the compassion committee, students will learn to step into the shoes of others and understand how their actions can positively impact the people around them.
The furniture requested in the project, (tables, cabinets, and cart) will go in a corner of the classroom set up and store the compassion closet supplies. The cabinet with doors with hold all items that students may want to discretely access.
Providing hygiene products in the compassion closet helps discretely address student concerns creating an environment where all students feel comfortable. By showing compassion to others who have everyday needs, enables all students to learn the importance of empathy and understanding.
Lastly, providing snacks for hungry students not only addresses the immediate physical needs of the students, but teaches valuable lessons of looking out for one another as the compassion committee restocks these items for others.
These items teach students to see the world from different perspectives. Student learning will be measured by observational data when students demonstrate acts of kindness and show compassion during the day.
