My Project

Being a teacher today means so much more than just teaching your subject matter. Screens and social media feed our students a steady diet of unkindness and lack of empathy and compassion for others. At its worst, it paints a dystopian world of no hope and truly anti social behavior. How can we as educators counter this content? Teachers must strive to re-connect our students to one another, to foster humanity and caring for all living creatures, to build kindness and compassion in our classroom, our community, our world!

Henry David Thoreau asked, “Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?” Truly, providing opportunities and teaching moments for students to see their peers, their teachers, people in their community with more compassionate eyes is essential in the world we live in today!

A color printer and sticker making supplies will help ignite my students creativity in our Compassion campaign. First, they will work in groups to create a mini zine, or tiny comic book, that tells a story about an act of compassion, like a classmate who recognizes another person at school is in need and offers support. Next, each student will make a sticker for someone they have identified as needing a friend, kind words or encouragement, and/or create compassion and kindness stickers for our classroom and school campus, challenging classmates to be more understanding, forgiving, and compassionate towards each other.

I will measure the success of our Compassion campaign through my own self evaluation of our classroom climate and environment, by observing students' demonstrated acts of compassion and supportive behavior towards each other, and by allowing them time to journal their own self reflections, as we embark on a journey together towards greater compassion for all.
