Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I enjoy teaching middle school students because they have the motivation and the ability to achieve. By 8th grade, which is what grade a currently teach, I want to prepare them for the big world they are about to step into and experience. My curriculum is tailored to discuss social issues that exist in their communities. They want to be seen as individuals who are responsible to make their own choices. I try to find a way to bridge the skills they need in the world with their interests and what's mandated by the state, district, and administration.

I taught the Class of 2019 in seventh grade and am lucky to be teaching them again for a second year in 8th grade.

The Class of 2019 has had their share of bumps in the road since the start of middle school. Regardless of whatever has been thrown at them, they have been flexible, resilient, and open to the changes during their school year.

My Project

As part of their study of Angela Thomas’ novel The Hate U Give, students will conduct a research project designed to establish context and depth around several aspects of the novel: double consciousness/codeswitching, the Black Panther movement, Tupac Shakur as activist, media portrayal of police violence, and the complexity of gang culture. Students share their learning at key moments during reading and discussion of the novel.

Students will watch the film to analyze the interpretation of the book.

They will discuss how the director highlights the novel. They will also point out the differences between the two mediums. The goal is to keep the conversation going about the role they play in their communities.
