This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am the school social worker for my High School. We are an immigrant community that supports newly arrived students. I would like to share that we currently have a Food Pantry named in honor of Gustavo Pertuz, our former coworker who passed away in April of 2020 because of Covid.

In the beginning of the school year 2020, Gustavo decided to create a system to support our students.Our school serves students from about 23 countries.

Many of these students come to us as war refugees, asylum seekers, or as people simply looking for a better future. Our school has about 420 students. Most of our students and their families struggle to buy basic necessities. One of the most difficult aspects for our community is the high rent payments that families have to pay. For this reason, Gustavo tried to look for a system that could provide all the support we can give, including basic necessities such as food and clothes.

Unfortunately, Gustavo passed away on April 23, 2020, due to Covid. Now, I have decided to keep Gustavo’s dream alive

We currently have students in temporary housing that need.

We have students that have fled from their countries due to civil wars. However, when these students arrive in NYC they face challenges. Our school is trying to provide…..
