Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work for a Title I school where 100% of my students receive a free breakfast and free lunch. My students come from low-income families, poor neighborhoods, and difficult hardships. My students are English Language Learners who are eager, curious, and at times unsure of their ability. My school's focus is to make sure students are college ready and college bound. I want my students to have access to a calm classroom environment. Many of my students live in small apartments or homeless shelters and my classroom is definitely a safe haven for them. I want my classroom to continue to be joyful and loving place for my students !

My Project

I have a wonderful group of loving and enthusiastic First Grade Students! My students need an inclusive, inviting place to come together for collaborative, engaging conversations. We need a clean carpet! My students are encouraged to select a space anywhere in the classroom where they can focus and do their best work. The students I work with are often discouraged to work on the carpet since it is very dirty! Furthermore, a clean carpet in our classroom will allow us to have a place for community circle and a place to share during partner time for Reading, Writing, and Math. When they are sharing as partners on the carpet, they are enhancing their listening and speaking skills. By providing soft, neutral colors, students will not be overstimulated and therefore will have minimized distractions and maximized partner conversation.
