My Project
Kindergarten is a year of big emotions. For many, it is their first experience away from their family home and their first experience in an academic setting. The demands of kindergarten can be challenging for many children, which makes it necessary to teach skills such as friendship, compassion, and how to handle difficult and uncomfortable situations.
Children's literature is a wonderful tool for teaching social emotional learning.
Through mentor texts, we will be able to talk about different traits and make connections with the characters and text. It's important to teach (and re-teach) rules, routine, and emotions. I want my students to be prepared on how to handle difficult situations and big emotions. As they become better regulators of their body, and emotions, they'll need less support from adults. The goal is to be as independent as possible, and that can happen with engaging literature, modeling, and extra support for emotions.
These books and fidget toys will be a great addition to the classroom. The books will be used in whole group lessons and with small groups as needed, while the fidget toys will be added to our already established calming corner.
