My Students

As a specialty/cluster teacher, my focus is community and independence, educating the students about the environment they live in and how to effectively navigate it on their own. For students with autism, teaching them to be independent is as important as academic education, and that's where my specialty comes in.

The school consists of 70 beautiful, yet challenged, children with autism.

The school is a special education setting primarily geared to students on the PPD spectrum. Students are grouped based on age, creating classrooms with immensely different learning levels, learning styles and abilities. My students are at a range from Kindergarten to fifth grade level with abilities ranging from young preschool to lower second grade. Their greatest challenge stems from an inability to communicate their wants and needs verbally or even non-verbally.

My Project

The project is a year-long, continuous one where the students will become acquainted with the community and build self-awareness and self-reliance. The project starts with lessons on safety and community-specific safety topics. The year continues with social stories and community walks. The students get to act out different scenarios in the comfort of the classroom before heading out into the community to explore.

Children learn to navigate the community in a safe, comfortable manner and ultimately, learn how to be self-reliant.

The different items I am requesting include a kidney table, which allows all the students to work collaboratively at the same time staff can reach each of them. Also I am requesting sensory tubs, marbles, and beads that will help the students learn the community within the classroom.
