My Students

The kindergarten students in my class are all diagnosed with Autism. They are energetic and creative, and love to move and dance. Some of my students communicate verbally, whereas others use sign language, picture supports, or communication devices. All of my students have learning challenges and difficulty using spontaneous social language. Although they communicate in a variety of ways, these students are all highly motivated during activities involving music. This is a universal language for all of them. My students are all able to engage in a shared language experience when we are exploring music and song. Whether we are singing about “Five Little Ducks” or exploring rhythms, everyone joins in.

My Project

My project will provide my students with a range of age-appropriate, colorful, sturdy instruments, and educational materials that can be used to expand their social language, learning, and communication skills. In addition, this project includes materials such as puppets and props to provide visual supports for familiar songs.

This project will provide my classroom with the tools needed for my students to participate in engaging music activities.

During these activities, my students will have the opportunity to learn to use language to make more requests, express preferences, increase their peer to peer interactions, and sing songs, all while maintaining a safe social distance. Each student will have their own set of instruments and materials that can be easily sanitized.
